What is a twinwall pipe?
Twinwall pipe is pretty much what it says on the tin – two plastic HDPE pipes that are welded together inside one another. The outer wall is corrugated whilst the inner wall is smooth to allow water to easily flow through.
What is perforated twinwall pipe?
A perforated twinwall pipe (also known as a filter drain) has a series of holes cut inside the corrugations of the pipe. These holes collect and carry water from a waterlogged or saturated area to a designated place, such as a storm drain or a natural watercourse like a stream. The pipe can be supplied as fully perforated or half-perforated, depending on your specific requirements.
What is an unperforated twinwall pipe?
In contrast to the perforated twinwall pipe, the unperforated pipe is completely solid and does not have any holes along its bore. Also referred to as carrier pipe, it is used to carry (and not collect) water to a discharge point, such as a storm drain or natural watercourse.
What are the benefits of a twinwall pipe?
Increase crop yields Depending on the condition of the land, well-drained land can improve crop yields by as much as 150%.
Improve soil quality for crops Having well-drained soils is vital to the health of your crops. Benefits include good soil structure for root development and oxygen for organic material, an extension to the growing or grazing season etc.
Prevent black grass In order to tackle this tricky problem, it is important to improve and maintain good soil structure by ensuring your land is well drained.
Prevent waterlogged sports pitches Prevent lost revenues through waterlogged pitches by ensuring they can be used all year round.
Smooth bore Provides superb hydraulic flow and a corrugated outer wall for added strength.
What is the difference between a twinwall pipe and a land drainage pipe?
Twinwall pipes and land drainage pipes have very similar uses, which can make it confusing to decide which one suits your application best.
However, they offer a few distinct differences:
Land drainage coil – mainly used to drain small gardens and large fields. These pipes are flexible and easy to transport and handle.
Twinwall pipe – generally used for bigger projects. These pipes are rigid and inflexible and the bigger the diameter, the heavier the pipe tends to be.
Using the right product for your application is important – if you’re in any doubt please get in touch, we’re always happy to help.
How to install a twinwall pipe?
To install a twinwall pipe, you will first need to dig out a trench, and then lay the pipe on the trench bed. Once in place, backfill and side-fill the trench with gravel. Then smooth over and finish the ground with topsoil.
What sizes are available in twinwall pipe?
Our twinwall pipes come in 6-metre lengths and range from 100mm to 3500mm in diameter. Your required size will depend on what sector and where you wish to install the twinwall.
Our pipes can be perforated or unperforated depending on your requirement, and we supply a full range of junctions, bends and adaptors.
Why choose a twinwall pipe from Cotterill Civils?
High strength & durability

Lightweight & easy to handle
Its lightweight material makes it easier to transport, handle and install than concrete or clayware.
Minimal joining
Minimal joining compared to concrete or clayware.
Increase yield potential
Make every acre count and buy back your unprofitable ground. Our land drain coil optimises your soil structure and yield, in turn maximising profits.
Increase land value
With land prices soaring, getting the optimum productivity and yield from every acre has never been more important. Efficiently drained land puts the landowner in a more favourable position with regard to selling or letting the land.
Improves playing surfaces
Efficient drainage of playing surfaces allows for enhanced performance, fewer games to be called off due to water-logged pitches, the minimisation of injury and, importantly, increased overall enjoyment.
Top tips for land drainage
We understand the importance of land drainage and the difference it can make.
That’s why we regularly share research, tips and news items related to land drainage. Here are just some of our articles:
Twinwall pipes are made from two HDPE pipes that are welded together, one inside the other. The inner wall is smooth to assist with the flow, while the corrugated outer wall enhances durability and strength.
These drainage pipes are designed to carry surface water below the ground, and can also be used for non-pressurised applications, such as rainwater harvesting.
Twinwall pipes can benefit various industrial applications, including highway, railway, and airport projects, as well as crop ventilation. They are an excellent choice for yard drainage systems and landfill sites, and can also drain excess water from your garden – eliminating wet spots.

Are Twinwall pipes easy to install?
Yes, Twinwall pipes are simple to install when you know how to do it. The first step is to prepare the trench, according to the manufacturers' guidelines.
The width of the trench needs to be between 300mm and 600mm, and it should have a pipe bed that you can lay the Twinwall pipe on top of. After lowering the pipe into the trench, use granulated gravel to side-fill the hole and support the pipe.
Once you've done this, you can then backfill the trench. Pebbles or shingles (stones no bigger than 50mm) must be compacted after achieving a depth of 300mm, before covering the trench with a suitable surface material. For more installation tips, talk to the team at Cotterill Civils today.

How do I choose the right size Twinwall pipe?
Knowing which Twinwall pipe size to choose can be tricky – but it generally depends on your application and where it will be installed.
For instance, if you’re draining water away from a small field, garden, or driveway, a 110mm or 150mm perforated Twinwall pipe is favourable.
Alternatively, on highways, you can use almost any unperforated pipe size from 150mm up to 600mm.
