What is an Inspection Chamber?

Playing an important role in the underground drainage system, the inspection chambers enable your drains to be cleaned on a regular basis, essentially preventing the formation of blockages. As well as this, the drain inspection chamber is designed to make it easier for you to assess your underground drainage, whether it be to clean or clear a blockage or a simple inspection to make sure that it’s performing efficiently.

What can it be used for?

There are countless reasons why the drain inspection chamber is used, but generally, the purpose of the inspection chamber is to ensure that you can easily reach your drainage system should you need to remove blockages.

The modern plastic manhole or chamber is designed to limit physical access, making it easier to stop people entering the drainage system without authorisation.
The drain inspection chamber is used when a branch pipe meets the main drainage or when there is a straight run of 22m or more. Another reason why the inspection chambers are used is to accommodate a horizontal change in direction by more than 30°.

Make sure that when you install the chamber, you have enough room to fit a drain rod throughout your underground drainage system.

How does it work?

The plastic manhole is a safe installation to make that’s guaranteed to restrict unauthorised access. Made up of 3 parts; the plastic manhole is simple and easy to use, allowing you to solve any underground drainage problems effectively.

The base is moulded to hold the drainage pipes in place, securing them to inlets and outlets whilst the risers sit above the base. More risers can be added to the base and the cover and frame will sit at ground level, on top of the last riser.

Where should I install a drainage inspection chamber?

An inspection chamber is generally needed in the following scenarios:

  • When pipework changes direction with an angle of more than 30dg - bends in pipe runs increase the probability of clogging
  • If the pipe size changes or the smaller branch pipe meets the main drainage pipe - this area is susceptible to blockages

    Are inspection chambers the same as manholes?

    Although the term ’inspection chamber’ is often used interchangeably with ‘manhole’, there are differences between the two.

    Manholes are much larger in size, allowing engineers to enter the pipe system. It’s unusual to have a manhole installed on domestic properties because they’re usually positioned along the main water company pipe line.

    Inspection chambers are much smaller and installed as access points for equipment, such as cameras or drain rods. An inspection chamber is used to identify and clear blockages in the pipes running from your house towards the main sewer line.

    How deep can a drainage inspection chamber be installed?

    This depends entirely on the diameter of your inspection chamber and the restricted access cover it has.

    Smaller access chambers set-up close to houses are typically 300mm in diameter. These inspection chambers can be fit to a maximum depth of 600mm.

    The most common inspection chamber diameter is 450mm and can be fitted at any depth up to 3000mm. A chamber installed at this depth must be sealed with a restricted access cover to prevent unwanted access and accidents from occurring.

    Are there any legal requirements to consider when installing inspection chambers?

    There are a few legal requirements outlined by the Ministry of Housing that you should familiarise yourself with when it comes to water drainage and waste disposal.

    They include regulations prohibiting buildings being constructed over drainage inspection chambers. Inspection chambers must also be manually accessible. Failing to adhere to these government regulations may result in fines or claims against you.
