What Is a Channel Drain?

A channel drain, also known as a linear drain, is a long, narrow drainage solution designed to collect and direct surface water to a designated outlet. It’s commonly used in:

  • Driveways

  • Patios

  • Garage fronts

  • Industrial areas

For high-quality options, explore our range of channel drains, including trusted brands like Polycon and Swarm.

Why Install a Channel Drain?

Tools and Materials Needed

Before beginning your installation, gather the following items:

Step 1: Planning Your Channel Drain System

  1. Identify Drainage Areas: Determine where water accumulates and where you want it to flow.

  2. Plan the Layout: Map the path for the channel drain, ensuring it connects to a suitable outlet.

  3. Measure and Mark: Use your measuring tape to mark the trench lines where the channel drains will be installed.

Step 2: Excavating the Trench

  1. Dig the Trench: Use a shovel or trenching tool to excavate a trench wide and deep enough to accommodate the channel drain and bedding material. Typically, allow 50-100mm for bedding material beneath the drain.

  2. Ensure Proper Slope: Maintain a slight gradient (around 1:100) to encourage water flow. Use a spirit level to check the slope.

Step 3: Installing the Bedding

  1. Prepare the Base: Add a layer of compacted gravel or concrete to create a stable base for the channel drain.

  2. Level the Bedding: Ensure the base is even to prevent misalignment during installation.

Step 4: Assembling and Positioning the Channel Drain

  1. Connect Channel Sections: Assemble the channel drain sections as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

  2. Place in the Trench: Position the channel drain in the prepared trench, ensuring the top is flush with the surrounding surface.

  3. Secure End Caps and Outlet Connectors: Attach end caps to the ends of the channel drain and connect outlet connectors to facilitate connection to the drainage system.

Step 5: Connecting to the Drainage System

  1. Attach Drainage Pipe: Connect the channel drain outlet to your existing drainage system using appropriate drainage pipes and connectors, like the Brett Martin PVC Coupler.

  2. Seal the Connection: Use PVC adhesive or concrete adhesive to create a watertight connection.

Step 6: Backfilling and Final Adjustments

  1. Backfill Around the Drain: Fill the trench with gravel or concrete to secure the channel drain in place.

  2. Ensure Level Surface: Use a spirit level to confirm that the channel drain is flush with the surrounding surface.

Step 7: Testing the System

  1. Run Water Through the Drain: Test the drain by pouring water along its length to ensure proper flow.

  2. Check for Leaks or Blockages: Ensure there are no leaks and that water flows smoothly to the outlet.
