Beginners Guide to Geogrids

If you’re looking for an effective way to reinforce soil or grass, then geogrids could be the answer. Here’s a useful guide to what they are and how they work.

What are geogrids?

A geogrid is a geosynthetic material used to stabilize soil. Geogrids are a material which is formed in a grid-like structure.

Geogrids are designed for soil stabilisation and reinforcement applications. They increase sub base performance and bearing capacity and reduce the thickness of the granular layers.

They are often known as Interlock Biaxial Geogrids.

How do geogrids work?

Geogrids have openings, called apertures, which allow aggregate to strike through and provide confinement and interlock. They work by minimizing aggregate movement and maintaining modulus values.

When do you use geogrids?

Geogrids can be filled with grass or gravel to improve appearance on site and to withstand harsh conditions.

Geogrids have multiple applications, including but not limited to:

  • Paved and unpaved roads
  • Industrial yards
  • Foundation reinforcement
  • Working platforms
  • Car parks

Interlock geogrids are available in a various biaxial configuration and can also be supplied as a composite material laminated to a non woven geotextile in the form of Interlock 30G.

Benefits of geogrids

Interlock biaxial geogrids feature consistently high tensile strength and modulus, excellent resistance to installation damage, chemical attack and environmental exposure.

  • High tensile strength: Interlock Geogrids feature consistently high tensile strength and modulus. High tensile strengths are mobilised at low strains.
  • Resistance to installation damage, chemical attack & environmental exposure: Interlock Geogrids will continue to perform in extreme weather conditions.
  • Excellent junction strength: As a rigid extruded material the Interlock geogrid range benefits from excellent junction strength and the superior performance associated with a rigid monolithic construction.
