As 5 per cent of UK homes are too remote to connect to the main sewers, it is becoming more and more common for properties to require off-mains drainage systems; such as a sewage treatment plant.
Installing a treatment plant can be undertaken by any DIYer but we do not recommend this, as if installed incorrectly, an off-mains sewage system can leave you in a terrible mess, both physically and legally. Hiring a professional contractor is the best way forward to ensure your system is suitable for your needs, reliable and legally compliant.
What is the process of installing a sewage treatment plant?
Pre-check - you must know the depth of your incoming pipework and match this to the treatment plant, along with the depth of the outfall from the treatment plant - if it does not achieve a gravity outfall you will need a pumped outlet system.
Know the depth you’d need to dig - knowledge of the ground is a great advantage as if you dig down and find water you’ll have to dewater and even shore up the hole to prevent collapse.
Ordering the treatment plant - let us know specific requirements about the installation such as depth of the drainage pipes so we can get products to suit your needs.
Receiving the treatment plant - check you have everything prior to signing for the treatment plant.
Excavation - excavate the hole and factor into the depth what base needs to be laid for the treatment plant to sit on e.g gravel.
Backfilling - some models can be backfilled with gravel, others need concrete - the installation manual will advise you on this.
Installing inlet and outlet - easy to do if your measurements are correct.
Setting up and wiring - should be performed by an electrician.
Commissioning - having your sewage system commissioned by a sewage service engineer is important as they could spot a problem and avoid future issues.
